One of the more difficult hurdles that many new Facebook users have to overcome is the inability to easily customise their Facebook profile.
One of the biggest differences between Facebook and MySpace is that, on Facebook, you cannot completely massacre the aesthetic quality of your main page with grotesque flashing graphics and glitter icons splattered all over the place. The flip side of this is that if you want to customise the Facebook profile, it’s nearly impossible. Nearly – but not completely.
For those of you that love standing out in the crowd, I’m going to offer a few ways that you can customise that Facebook profile.
The tools that I’m going to outline allow you to add cool imagery and other features to your profile sidebar. While it isn’t quite as elaborate or dramatic as transforming the look of your entire Facebook profile page – with just a few nicely inserted code snippets in the MyStuff Facebook app, you can give your Facebook profile an awesome look that represents your own personality.
Facebook Profile Customise With Gigya MyStuff
The first method that I’d like to cover here lets you transform your Facebook profile by using the MyStuff application and then choosing which graphics you would like to your sidebar. If you’ve never used Gigya’s MyStuff application, then go to the MyStuff app page and install it.
I’ve seen other applications, like the popular Facebook Expressions, work for a while and then lose the functionality to add content to the left bar on the main profile page, but the MyStuff app consistently works. Once you’ve added the app to your Facebook account, the ability to add cool stuff to your left sidebar is only limited by your ability to find cool content. In order to help you out, here are a few resources for great images and features that you can insert into MyStuff to customise your Facebook profile.
LongAgo is a cool site that lets you create a free photo slideshow for sharing your photos on social networks. Just upload the photos from your computer, name the album and then click on”Get Embed Code.”
Go to your MyStuff tab, and click on “Add Code.”
A new code box will open at the bottom of your MyStuff page items, where you can paste the embed code from your LongAgo slideshow.
Once you click “Add to profile,” your slideshow appears in full size on the “MyStuff page,” but more importantly it gets embedded into your MyStuff box on your main profile page.
While the slideshow doesn’t automatically flip through your images within this main profile page display, it does offer a link where your profile visitors can “See Full Size,” and they’ll get whisked away to your MyStuff page where they can view your photo slideshow.
Maybe, instead of a slideshow, you’d just like to feature one cool MySpace-like (glittery or flashy) image on the sidebar of your main profile page. Have no fear – MyStuff will let you personalize your profile with images. One such site that offers images that you can embed into Facebook (there are lots of others as well) is MintProfile.
Just scroll down through the images for the one that you’d like. Under “Facebook Graphics,” there are categories like birthdays, greetings, love, Christmas and more. When you find the one you want, just highlight the code next to the image, paste it into your Facebook MyStuff code box, and voila – your new image adds a bit of personality to your main page.
I should note that even though the image may be animated on your MyStuff tab, once it’s embedded onto your profile page, the animation is stripped away. Also, be careful of the width of the picture you choose, or the right side may get chopped off (stick with a max of 180 pixels) – although you can pick some cool tall and narrow images that would make your profile look great. Check out FanPop for some well sized entertainment images that’ll fit well, or check out the graphics and image tools that Aibek listed.
If sparkly images aren’t your thing, and you’d rather do a facebook profile customise job with cool animated apps, just go over to the tools section of MintProfiles.
You’ll find animated lava lamps, hearts, scrolling LED letters and more. My favorite of them all were the clocks, and I embedded the blue-faced clock on my profile page.
The animation does work, but the user has to click on the object first. I tested it and the click showed the correct time and when I clicked on it, the second hand started moving – very cool! The one drawback with the MyStuff app is that you can only add one feature at a time – whichever item is listed at the top of the MyStuff page is the one that gets displayed on your profile.
Of course, another unique way to add more interactiveness to your Facebook profile page is by adding content from outside apps to the sidebar. For example, the Joe’s Goals app that I reviewed here offers a Facebook badge that you can embed using the MyStuff box.
You can actually do this with a number of Facebook applications, such as Mafia Wars or Farmville. Just go to Account, then Application Settings. For the app you want to add to your profile sidebar, click “Edit Settings” and for “Box” click on Add. Then, go back to your profile, click on the “Boxes” tab, scroll down to the app badge, click on the pencil “Edit Box” and select “Move to Wall tab“. Doing this, you can feature the Facebook apps that you love the most – right on your main page.
Of course, if you don’t like the order that your images and app badges appear along the left bar, just grab one that you want to move with your mouse and drag it up or down to whatever position you like.
While Facebook may not allow the sort of outrageous customization that MySpace has always allowed, it does let you customise your Facebook profile just enough so that you can feature little clues in on your main page that tell people the kind of person you are and what kind of unique personality you have. So have fun and customise away!

Google likes to release some of its new “beta-type” features in what they call “Google Labs” and many of Google’s services have a labs section. Check out articles about Gmail labs features and Google Calendar labs features.
Well, Google Maps is no exception. With the Google Maps labs features you can do all sorts of things with Google Maps features from Drag ‘n’ Zoom to Rotatable Maps to Smart Zoom. As a disclaimer, these features are in a testing phase and because of this they may “change, break, or disappear.” This list will contain some of the cooler Google Maps Labs features.
Drag ‘n’ Zoom: With the drag ‘n’ zoom feature you can now zoom in right where you need to by making a quick box around the area you want to zoom closer on. I usually use the scroll button on my mouse and other people use the left-hand lever, but now you can add the left-click and drag to the zooming abilities!
Rotatable Maps: Google Maps have brought us closer and closer to feeling as if we are holding a real map in our hands except a lot better. Now, with the ability to actually rotate the map too, we can get a real feel about which direction we are looking in. In fact, this new labs feature is similar to what Google Earth already does.
What’s Around Here?: Have you ever been in a new area, whether visiting or just moved, and have wondered what kinds of places of interest are nearby? With this new labs feature for Google Maps you can search for “What’s Around Here” with the click of a button. Usually when I am using Google Maps I am looking for something specific like pizza so I’d search for my specific address or location and then type pizza afterward. If you are in a totally new area, you may be interested in any kind of place of interest so you can do some exploring. If that is the case, this new feature is for you.
LatLng Tooltip: This Google Maps Labs feature makes use of a tooltips feature and allows you to see the latitude and longitude of wherever your cursor happens to be on the map. If you are wondering about the exact location of anything, just glance at your cursor and you’ll see.
Remember, these features are Google Maps Labs features and they are still in testing. Feel free to give them a test yourself. There are also more features listed. Some work and some don’t.
In order to activate the features, you have to find the green beaker at the top of the Google Maps page (labeled “new”)…
And click “Enable” next to any feature you would like to try out…
Then just click “Save Changes“
Check these new features out and tell us what you think of them. You’ll notice that some are more useful than others but hey, worth a try, right? You can’t really break anything because it’s all on the Google Maps website. Also, let us know what your favorite Google Maps labs feature is. Really, we want to know.

Free GPS apps are a dime a dozen in the iPhone app store, but, surprisingly, there aren’t a lot of free iPhone compass apps out there.
Perhaps people don’t use compasses any more, as orienteering is made easy with GPS capabilities, but it is still useful to have a compass if you are walking around in the woods.
My hope was to find at least one of the best iPhone compass apps that was as accurate as the real one in my pack.
They were a bit hard to find, as most of the apps I did find didn’t really work all that well on my iPhone 3G.
Apparently, the 3G does not have a built in compass, and this prevented a lot of apps from working. If there is a North arrow, it will always point up on the 3G. On the 3Gs, there is, indeed, a compass, so the North arrow will always point to true North.
But, fear not faithful readers! There are at least 5 good compass apps that work just as well as a scout’s compass.
The List of Best iPhone Compass Apps
City Compass
City Compass is a really cool app that lets you know where the cities are around you and how many miles it takes to get there.
City Compass [iTunes link] is really sweet. Even if you have a simple 2G or 3G iPhone, it is still pretty handy. First, allow the app to use your location, then read the little ditty about the North arrow, and voilà! cities just pop up all over the place!
I like it because it is really easy to use, and it shows all those tiny towns that are hard to see on Google map apps.
Compass for 3G
As with all compasses, Compass for 3G works best if you walk in a straight line.
This has a nice stop/start function, but it did take quite a while for it to update. It is a keeper because it has a nice Google map button, so you can see where you are on the map.
Compass for 3G [iTunes link] is nice and easy. The three buttons at the bottom help you keep time as you walk or drive, and by selecting “map” you are sent over to nice little map app that allows you to place a pin (or check the traffic!).
CompassApp
CompassApp isn’t the best one on the list, but it is pretty cool nonetheless.
You can customize the face of the compass with a picture from your iPhone, or you can take a picture right there and use it. It is pretty basic, and it tells you your lat/long coordinates, but, sadly, there is no North button.
CompassApp [iTunes link] is pretty simple BUT you can customize the face of your compass using a picture taken on the spot (picture 1) or use one from your stash (picture 3).
Digital Compass Free
I love because it is both a compass and a GPS. I also love the digital nature of it, so it is easier to read than a standard compass. When I held it up to my regular compass, they were spot on identical.
Digital Compass Free [iTunes link] is refreshing because of its digital display. The map feature is also really handy!
Planets
Planets is one of the coolest apps out there if you are a sky freak. It shows the stars and planets, and identifies all the nearby constellations and star groupings.
It also shows you what you might be able to see in the night sky. My kids love playing with the different interface options like “infrared.”
While it won’t necessarily help you find your way out of the woods, it is definitely a lot of fun to use on a night hike!
Planets [iTunes link] is such a sweet application! The first screen shows which planets and stars are in your sky, and you can adjust your screen to show you what you most want to see. I love the spinning Earth option because it makes it really easy to explain orbits and night/day to kids!
The Bottom Line
If you love using your compass, don’t toss out the real deal quite yet. But, if used in conjunction with the iPhone apps listed here, you will learn a lot of great stuff about the area.
iPhones typically take a bit of time to update, and this is true in both compass and GPS apps, so you have to be a little patient when using these apps.

A film and movie freak can dig out all the usual – and unusual – details of a movie without help, but to give movie lovers some heads up here are ten websites or webpages where you can find a bucketful of trivia questions.

The Internet Movie Database is the ultimate reference for movies released around the world. But it is not just loads and loads of data. You also get to chill out with some cool games like Tile Slider where you arrange the tiles to make scenes from your favorite movies. There are levels too, from the easy to the super difficult. How fast can you solve it?
If that’s a bit too much then check out the trivia quiz, or The Hangman Game where you have to guess the answer or swing.
You won’t become a Jedi master, but you will be able to hold your head high in the council of Star War fans if you manage to conquer this cool movie trivia game. A little video pops up and a fan just like you asks a question. Get the answer before the light saber beats you to the time.
The two games featured here took me back to my school quizzes. Given a frame from a movie, you have to get the name. That’s the Frame by Frame game. If you think watching a 5 second clip and guessing is easier, think again because you might get a lot of answers wrong when you play Gone in 5 Seconds. Screenplay also has a puzzle game called Movie Madness and a normal quiz for those who like their games simple.
Play against the community and find out how well you know a movie. The questions are put up through a host of Flash quizzes. The challenge is to get on the leaderboard.
Visual and text quizzes and its trademarked Invisibles quiz are the hallmarks of this movie trivia website. In the Invisibles quiz, you are given a screenshot from a scene but with just the costumes of the characters. The characters are all invisible. How cool is that!

Follow the link and get into the site’s Movie Quizzes. You can sort the quizzes that are collected or browse them according to the genres given in the sidebar. The quizzes are of similar Q&A types but the sheer variety of topics makes them interesting challenges.

You can register and log in to share all the fun with the community or just play it alone. There are cool movie trivia games like The Never-Ending Movie Quiz, where users submit questions and keep the game going by answering those submitted by others.Play a round of Personality Tests and you can find out which Hollywood star you resemble the most. Then there are a host of user submitted quizzes to keep you busy if you get ditched by your date on a movie night.
Entertainment quizzes galore. These are a mix of trivia and tests. For instance, the question in the screenshot above will give you an inkling. But nearly all of them will test how much you really know about the movies.
Go into this trivia game if you really know your ‘Maltese Falcon’ from your ‘Casablanca’. Turner Classic Movies can really test your knowledge by asking you 15 trivia questions daily. Get yourself on the leaderboard or better still, ask your grandparents to play this game for a round of Sunday fun.

Build Your Wild Self is that one-in-a-million avatar tool. It draws your kiddy self in rich colors and imaginative features. Inner adults do not exist. You should still find a remnant of the kid in you. The resulting avatars have that grainy pencil-drawn look about them. Talk about character.
Sure, you can use the tool to draw some normal arms and buttocks, but how boring would that be? Rather put in a little octopus, lying, or arachnid. Consider it a conversation starter.

Back to pencilwork, Digibody’s Caricature Maker is for those of you who aren’t looking for the most realistic depiction. Draw yourself in caricature with a few heavily exaggerated facial features. There’s things little more personal than enlarging and making fun with your own characteristics. After all, it’s the quirks and imperfections that make you… well, you.
The tool is sometimes a little slow to respond, and seems to reload the page with every customization, but the result is often hilarious. I give you my word, you’ll have a hard time finding a lot of normal facial features on that page.

Have you ever used a computer without a mouse? I don’t need to tell you that it’s extremely hard – even for a keyboard guy like me. Switching between open applications is easy (Alt + Tab), accessing the menu is also a walk in the park (Alt + Underlined letter – in Windows); but when the time to click a weblink comes, the suffering starts.
At my workplace, there’s only one public computer in our common room. Individual computers are for top management only. So everybody at my workplace was furious when our little black mouse vanished. Even though one of my friends was kind enough to lend his own mouse, the tension was still rising. To lighten up the atmosphere, I decided to make a quick and funny desktop wallpaper based on the situation.
Why wallpaper? So that everybody – the management people included – could see it. And why quick? Because in about fifteen minutes, one of the supervisors would visit the common room.
Word Painting
The problem was, the only graphic application that existed on the computer was MS Paint. Extremely inadequate for our little project. And to think that I only had several minutes left, I might just have canceled my plan. Fortunately, there’s MS Word to save the day.
In my humble opinion, using the famous Microsoft Word just to write documents is overkill. It has so many features beyond word processing. My first graphic editor is Word, and I still use it occasionally for small and quick projects like this wallpaper thingy.
In the rush of the moment, I didn’t have the time to document the process. So I recreated everything at home using MS Word for Mac. The images might have slight differences to the Windows version, but the steps are exactly the same.
Anyway, here’s what I did. I opened a blank document :
And changed the orientation to landscape.
I inserted a text box and started to type some ‘catchy’ phrases/sentences.
Then I edited the text: changing the font types, sizes, colors, alignment, and other attributes.
I switched from Word to the web for a while to find an appropriate picture. I opened the web browser and went to Flickr to do the “commercial use Creative Common search“. If you have Quix, you could do this quicker by using “fc“. My search string was cute mouse.
I found one image that I liked, downloaded it and inserted it to my document using the “Insert > Picture > From File” menu.
I also adjusted the picture to fill the document, and arranged it to appear behind the text (Right click –> “Arrange > Behind Text“).
After that, I continued by customizing the text box. I right-clicked on it and chose “Format Text Box”
I gradient filled the text box using the similar tone of color as the picture I used: Dark Brown and Light Brown. I also set the transparency to around 50%.
My last steps were changing the font color to white and did some minor adjustments.
Capturing The Image
After finishing the final product, I viewed the document in full screen and captured the image using Jing.
Then I quickly went to the Desktop, changed the wallpaper, and waited for the supervisor to lay his eyes on the new wallpaper.
One final note: basically, you could do this kind of project under any OS and using any kind of application as long as it can manipulate text, insert shape and insert picture. Just be creative.
You could read other articles about using MS Word for graphical uses such as to create a Mind Map, or to create a logo. And even though the definition of “good design” is very subjective, you could improve your ’sense’ by learning the basic principle of design.

The first application up is free for only a limited time and is called Ka-Glom. Ka-Glom is one of many games that evolved from Tetris and that Mario game that kind of resembled Tetris. Your goal here is to match up falling objects of a specific color to other objects that are the same color. Match three or more and they will go Ka-Glom and you get the points.
The way it stands out from other similar free blackberry games is that it also has blobs that fall. And when enough blobs are on top of one another they will go kabloooie! They will also take any objects that are directly next to them with it!

Next up is a little tidbit called Vegas Pool Shark Lite. Here you are in Vegas hustling (or getting hustled) playing pool. You can line up your shots and make your high school physics teacher proud. There are four different opponents, three game types, full 3D viewing and for the beginners there is Shooting Assistance. In this free version we are able to score up to three points and then you can start again – still very cool for a free time waster.
Pixilated is highly addictive and probably my favorite out of the bunch. The object of Pixilated is to make the entire screen (which is made up of colored pixels hence the name) one solid color. It takes some getting used to so you can get the hang of it. But once you do watch out – because you will not let your spouse pull you away from it . Or maybe that is just me! Next up is another puzzle type game called Cube Touch which can also be addictive. It is a clone of Bejeweled which I am sure you all know.You have to match 3 or more colored “cubes” up and down or across. The same rules apply which you can see below:
And last but certainly not least, Sudoku Puzzles Lite will keep you busy for hours. The popular word game is now on your Blackberry for free. And with it comes 10 puzzles at each difficulty level, timer, save feature, clear all feature and much more. The only difference that I saw between the lite and full version is the amount of puzzles included. The full version has 100 games for each difficulty level. Wordpress is the best all round blogging platform. You can use it for a simple online journal or to power huge websites such as our very own MakeUseOf.
I guess thats why so many bloggers trust it to get the job done on an everyday basis, as well as keep their site looking great with themes and widgets.
That being said, there are times when we need specific features and that’s where plugins come in. Many of us will use plugins to make our blog comparable with another service such as a social network or to improve server response time, but today I want to take a look at three cool Wordpress plugins I use which just make blogging easier and more enjoyable.
The WP login page hasn’t changed much since the platform was first released so it’s cool to be able to jazz it up with this plugin.
What it does is simple: it transforms your login page into a page of your blog when wp-admin redirects you to the login page. The login area is displayed where your post would normally be with the rest of your blog being the same. You can still use the normal login page by going directly to wp-login.php.
While this doesn’t make blogging any easier per se, it does give you a little bit of individuality and fun.
This plugin will be of great benefit to those who post on their blogs every few days or so and like to keep their posting pattern regular. Obviously, if you own a bigger blog then some of the point is lost because all of the days will be highlighted but it might still be useful to you to decide which day a post would be best suited to.
It’s a basic plugin but one of my favorites. A small calandar will appear once the plugin is installed, to the right of your posting area. The days when you have post scheduled for the remainder of the month will be highlighted in green as seen above. The current day is highlighted and bolded.
I find this really handy when posting as I just have to glance at the calandar to check my frequency and to decide what day/date would be the best for the post to go live.
A picture is worth a thousand words and like most bloggers, I like to start off an article with a big, high-quality picture that really captures the theme of the article. The trouble is that when posting creative commons images you have to source the picture on a separate website such as Flickr and post an attribution link.
Photodropper however, creates a small icon in the post editor as shown. When clicked a search bar will appear. This enables you to search Flickr for CC images. When you click on one of the results and select the appropriate size (the largest being 500px), the image is placed in the post and an attractive link along with the Creative Commons logo is placed below.
I think this makes the post look very professional and also saves you a lot of hassle.
